A Tombers Thanksgiving
Each year, it seems we have more and more to be thankful for and this year was no exception. This is our fourth Thanksgiving in Alaska. Hard to believe we have been here that long already, yet not much time to build a holiday tradition. I have spent nearly every holiday for the past 3.5 years working, because we had a big goal. But no longer! As I noted in my last post, this year we became DEBT FREE and have cheerfully taken back our holidays and weekends. In past years, Brad has gone for a Thanksgiving morning hike and this year I was finally able to go along.
The morning dawned clear and cold, a brisk 4*. We bundled up and headed out to Eklutna Lake, a 30 mile drive from our house off the Glenn Highway headed towards Anchorage. It is a trail we have done before and is not exceptionally difficult, but awards beautiful views of the lake and surrounding ridge lines. Surprisingly the lake was still open water, but all the trees were covered in glittering frosty white and the air was still and quiet as only a winter day can be.
We hiked about a mile and a half up the Twin Peaks Trail to the first look out point and caught the sun just as it rose over the mountains. After taking time to soak in the beautiful winter wonderland below, we opted to turn back towards the trailhead rather than continue on to the summit - our boots were feeling extra heavy and my mittens were not quite keeping the chill away.
Once home (and into some warm, dry, cozy clothes) we spent the afternoon watching Netflix documentaries, snacking on charcuterie and popcorn, and snuggling with our boy Tim. He's a really good snuggler.
Here's to all those who give up holiday time with family and friends and go punch the clock in order to keep our community safe, healthy, happy, and fed. Know that you are important and we appreciate your service and sacrifice. Happy Thanksgiving, friends.
